Essay for the Win: College Essay Edition

College admissions essays can be a stressful part of the college application process, but they're not always as intimidating as they seem. In this guide, I'll show you how to write a great essay that will wow admissions officers and get you into your dream school.

  • Choose a topic that you are passionate about. Your essay should reflect your interests and values. If you don't care about the topic, it will show in your writing

  • Avoid these cliche topics unless you have a beautifully unique perspective that no one has heard before

  • Choose a topic that relates to your major or dream career path (this could be about your future plans and how you envision contributing to the profession)

Tips for Success: Organizing your Essay

  • Goals-and-steps method: First, identify your goal in writing the essay (for example, "I want to go to college"). Then write down all the steps or actions needed for reaching that goal (for example, "I need good grades"). Finally, develop each step into a paragraph by answering any questions such as "How did I get these grades?" or "How did doing extracurriculars help me reach my goals?"

Chronological method: Imagine that we're playing back a video recording of your life from start to finish—what would we see? What did happen first? Second with third etc..
